Transmission problem

I have an AUDI 200 Quattro 5 cyl. 5 spd.
While pressing the clutch, it would go down almost to the floor but still able to press it and shift. It seemed like if I had a very short clutch... this happened twice and after a day or two the clutch went back to "normal" it's original position. Then while driving, I pressed on it and it went all the way to the floor not coming back at all. I can't shift at all. When the car is parked and completely off, I can shift all the gears smoothly, there's no grinding. I'm wondering if it's only the clutch slave cylinder that is at fault. Any suggestions?
