Engine overheats after a short drive of less than five km. Put new head gasket on engine. Head went for skimming, but not pressure testing. Car has closed circuit cooling system.

Have cooling system pressure tested. check level of antifreeze in radiator and reservoir first. Compression test cylinders, then a cylinder leakdown test. Exhaust steam would show bad gasket or cracked head or block.

I also discovered that the oil cooler was by-passed.

That is good but it wont cause the engine to overheat in 5km. Have you done the thermostat?

Hey GEORGERINGIRISAI,

It is in the bottom of the water pump, here is a diagram to help find it.

Let us know what happens.
