My truck has been making a thump sound and It sounds like it’s coming from the front. It only happens as soon as I go, I stop and I go and I hear it and I don’t hear it when I am driving. I only hear it when I go. When it thumps I feel it by the brake pedal.

Hello my name is Dave.

Honestly it sounds like you may have a serious safety issue, there are quite a few parts that can cause the symptoms you have described. The most likely cause would be in the suspension. Here is a link to our tutorial on checking the suspension:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/popping-noise

I would caution you to do your best to find the problem as soon as possible before you have a serious part failure that could cause loss of control. If you perform the tests listed in our tutorial and don't find the problem please let us know and we will do our best to help you find the problem. I hope this helps you solve your problem and thank you for using 2CarPros!

I recently replaced front disc and rear drum brakes. The rotors replaced. after a 2000 mile trip 3-days later the brakes became an issue. I noticed a little grabbing toward the end of the 2000 miles (in 3-days). The issue morphed into a situation where I would try to move the truck after sitting overnight or even a few hours and the brakes would be tight upon start up, so much so that at times I thought I would have to call a tow truck. The phenomenon would ease up after a few minutes run time. I did take the truck back and the shop said they adjusted them, should be fine.....two additional trips and the brakes are still grabbing, more obvious at slow speeds and ridiculous for the first few miles. I am wondering if the ABS system is malfunctioning or the shop has screwed up. NOTE: original brakes never grabbed although front rotors were warped from mile one and were not too shaky. This is the first replacement from original. suggestions? should i take to a dealership or can any decent shop check the ABS system.

If there are no codes stored in the ABS module, we can rule out any HCU problems. More than likely the shop may not have used premium brake parts. In addiation to that, it may have been a sloppy brake job.

Take it to a different shop and get a second opinion.

It lasts for my first five stops and is very irritating And loud. I've changed my front brakes for OEM equivalent Brembos. That didn't fix it. I pulled my drums and cleaned and adjusted the screw out until it was dragging on the drum a little and it got slightly better. All surfaces were smooth and evenly wore. No signs metal had contacted metal anywhere. I'm baffled and nothing online about my exact problem.

Brembos can squeak they have different pad configurations that squeak less. can I ask which ones you have? Can you please shoot a quick video with your phone so we can see what's going on? that would be great. You can upload it here with your response. Please let me know

Spray the pivots with Silicone Spray Lube. It goes on like water, then evaporates leaving a slippery film behind.

Chrysler also has a product called Spray White Lube that is REAL effective but it can be messy. It sprays on juicy so the liquid soaks into the joints and takes the grease with it, then the liquid evaporates leaving the grease behind.

is the noise constant, rythmic, or road surface reaction related? how does speed effect it?

It's a constant noise, I hear it mostly when I am rolling slowly. The road surface does not effect it, it makes the noise wither I am on a smooth surface or bumpy,

Is the brake pedal suppose to make a grinding noise and push out causing the vehicle roll a little bit more before stopping. it is equipped with abs.

I had purchased the truck 2 weeks ago and noticed the fuse was missing for the abs so i purchased one and put it in. then decided to run some errands. thats when the abs kicked in to find out that is whats happening in the above question.

the brake pedal is actually making a grinding noise and pushing out with great force to keep the brakes from locking up and the truck keeps moving instead of stopping then it will stop making the noise and the force to come to a stop. oh it will kick in after slowing down in the middle of braking.

abs is activating for some reason. you need a shop with a scan tool to monitor these actions when it is happening.

i dont see how there could be a grinding noise from the brakes themselves since they dont do it with ABS off.

The ABS module valve motor is bad, replace it, also...

GM had A recall on the ABS sensors themselves they corrode and then cant read the speed correctly, usually acts up worse at lowers speeds. You could take the sensors out and clean them real good or replace with new ones that shouldn't corrode like the originals had. And yes when the abs is activated to stop tire lockup it will sound like the pedal is grinding, and the pedal will push back. GM has mode the abs quieter as the years have went...

The problem I am having starts as I am slowing down to a stop.Usually below 10 mph. The brakes start to make a grrrring sound that sounds like it is coming from the power boost unit. The truck stops eventually but acts like it is not getting full pressure to the brakes. Letting off the pedal and reapplying usually stops the truck. The pedal never goes to the floor during this time. Brake fluid level is up to the correct level. Reapplying the brakes has worked untill this morning on the way to work when I was stopping for a traffic light and almost didn,t stop in time before coming too close to the vechicle in front of me. Reapplying the brakes actually made it worse and the noise got louder. Any ideas would be helpful. Is there a way to check the booster unit? Thanks Gary

Is that a vacuum booster or hydro-boost? Usually if a vacuum booster is failing the pedal will become hard to push due to lack of vacuum assist. To accurately test the vacuum booster you will need a vacuum pump or manual gauge.

Ok, I'm a regular driver. I deliver papers for the local newspaper in my area. I'm constantly running hard and sometimes have to hit the breaks for the occasional herd of Elk. But this is typically usual for stopping at, relatively high speeds for a truck. My truck does have ABS so i have been told this "clicking" sound is coming from the abs because this issue only occurs when the breaks are locked up. (so realistically this happens at lows speeds on ice also) The sound is similar to a wind-up-toy that has been wound too far and there is some vibration in the pedal.

I'm asking because I'm getting ready to change my breaks next month and want to make sure there might not be a caliper issue also. Because occasionally i do get a pull to one side. I just ask this cause ive had many vehicals with ABS over the years as it kinda comes standard these days and have never heard breaks click like crazy like this.... kinda bothers me considering i just had a New born last week

Any ideas?

it is probably the pads worn and needing shims which are already onnew pads. just make sure caliper moves freely when replacing them. I would suggest putting rebuilt calipers on if there is apull to one side as it may be frozen. also put on new hardware kits auto parts can show what they are. Normally ABS has like a groan sound when it activates and pedal can bounce up and down especially on gravel.

I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado, automatic transmission, 4-wheel drive, 178000 miles. I had a shake when braking so I replaced the front rotors and pads, and still have this vibration problem, but not with every stop. Speed has no effect as sometimes it vibrates at a low speed stop and other times at high speed. Some stops have NO vibration at all. It appears to be coming from the right front. I had the ball joints checked and was told they were still okay, with normal wear. The truck also does not seem as tight or as stable as before. it also has new tires all the way around. Where do I look next? The control arm bushings? The idler arm? Something is causing this intermittent vibration when stopping. I am perplexed to say the least.

Some of these had a intermittant false abs problem but were most likley apt to act up at slower speeds. The front speed sensor would have a gap that was too large. Removal, and cleaning of the speed sensor's surface was required.

Is there a possiblilty of the parking brake shoe delaminating and causing the the vibration from the rear?

With that mileage I would check the front end. Most likely needs an Idler arm, Pitman arm and tie rod ends. Check the front wheel bearings too (hub assemblies)

This is more of an add-on to the original question, rather than an answer. I have an '03 Silverado 1500-HD 4WD auto with 51k miles, and I'm having the same issues. The brake vibration isn't severe, but certainly noticeable. Could the ABS sensor still be the source with only 51k miles? Looks like the pads still have plenty of life, and the rotors don't show any obvious signs of damage.

it is possible. Check the wheel bearings, and have the rotors measured for run-out, could be slightly warped.Does the truck have the stock size tires? Also try rotating the tires front to back

Tires are stock. I'll look things over - once I can get the darn wheel off! Lug nuts are off and the wheel still won't budge! ?????????
