I have a 2007 chevy Impala. There is a symbol that pops up whenever I try to start the car. Ithe symbol looks likes a car with a lock on it. The car won't start but it does try to start. I read something that says it may be something with the cars security system. I really need to know what that means. I just spent 6000.00 on it yesterday.

I have a 2007 Chevy Impala LS. I recently have been having problems with the keyless entry. The remote will not work when I want to unlock the car. After I use the key to get in the car the and physically open the door the remote will work. When I shut the door and get out of the car I am able to use the remote. After a couple of minutes the remote will not work. I have tried two different remotes and I have the same problem. Any help would be great.

replace the remote control door lock reciever,Some customers may comment about one or more of the following conditions:

• The remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitters will not program, function and/or the RKE transmitter low battery message is displayed.

• The Service Tire Monitor System message is displayed.

• The new RKE transmitter cannot be programmed.

• The remote keyless entry (RKE) and/or remote vehicle start (RVS) transmitter has poor range.

Cause
Any of these concerns may be caused by an internal fault with the transmitters and/or the Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR) software/hardware.Replace the RCDLR module and the RCDLR antenna.Reprogram the RCDLR with the latest software update.you will get 2 new remotes also.post back with what you find.

When you turn your key on the computer will run a light check on the dash? When all those lights go out one of them will say security and that light will either stay on or flash if it is in security lock down?

If it is in lock down here is a guide to reset it:

Good evening,

You can try resetting the security. I attached a guide for you to try that procedure.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-reset-a-security-system

I will not give you the instructions for disabling a safety feature. Sorry, but that is there for security reasons and I am not comfortable giving that information.

Replaced countless parts including battery starter and anti theft immobilizer module. Taken it to several mechanics. No success. One night I was able to do the 10 minute set of 3 thing and get the light to turn off each time. But my battery drained right before the third try. Replaced it with a brand new battery only for it not to work anymore. Very frustrating as I lost my job over this issue and soon my house. I am to the point I can’t afford anymore parts or work done to it. Although everything runs perfect other than the security won’t let me turn it on. Please help!

Hi,

Is the security light staying on now? What happens if you allow the key to stay on for about 10 minutes. Will the light go out? I noted you are a mechanic. Do you have a scan tool that can scan the can bus system?

Let me know.

When this indicator is on there are normally codes that go along with it so let's start there.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/checking-a-service-engine-soon-or-check-engine-light-on-or-flashing

Once we know the code we can take the next step but i would try and put the key in the ignition and let is sit with it in the on position for about 30 minutes and just see if the light turns off. If not, then we need the codes and go from there. Thanks

It is always been solid on since the problem came out of no where. It was going out after I replaced the anti theft immobilizer but my battery lost juice shortly after. Didn’t have a charger at the time but had a brand new battery that I swapped out with and now it won’t go out no matter how long i wait. I don't know if I’m doing something different or what. And unfortunately I do not have that tool, I’m limited on supplies and when it comes to security systems I lack a lot of knowledge. Thanks for your quick response and assistance with this frustrating issue.

Okay, I did some checking and everything is showing the need for a scan tool. Here is what I suggest: Disconnect the battery, remove the module, keep it out for at least 10 minutes, and start over. See if having it disconnected allows you to get things to reset.

If you want the relearn procedures, please let me know.

Absolutely... Here is what I am showing:

Vehicle Accessories and Optional Equipment Anti-theft and Alarm Systems Testing and Inspection Programming and Relearning Programming Theft Deterrent System Components - Immobilizer
PROGRAMMING THEFT DETERRENT SYSTEM COMPONENTS - IMMOBILIZER
Programming Immobilizer System Components

10-Minute Immobilizer Relearn

This 10-minute relearn procedure will relearn the prerelease password and the challenge/response data between the theft deterrent module (TDM) and the engine control module (ECM).

1. Connect a scan tool to the vehicle.
2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
3. Ensure that all power consuming devices are turned OFF on the vehicle.
4. With a scan tool, select Request Info. under Service Programming System and follow the scan tool on-screen instructions.
5. Disconnect the scan tool from the vehicle and connect the scan tool to a Techline Terminal with the current Service Programming System (SPS) software.
6. On the Techline Terminal, select Service Programming System and follow the Techline Terminal on-screen instructions. Ensure the correct programming selection is chose based on component being replaced or programmed. For this procedure, go to the V.T.D. Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn menu and choose the Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn, ECM, or PK3 Replaced selection.
7. Disconnect the scan tool from the Techline Terminal and reconnect the scan tool to the vehicle.
8. With a master vehicle key, turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
9. With a scan tool, select Program ECU under Service Programming System.
10. At this point the scan tool must remain connected for the duration of the 10-minute relearn procedure.

Important:
* The scan tool will initially display 12 Minutes. The first 2 minutes allow the scan tool to initialize the appropriate control module. The remaining 10 minutes is the relearn timer.

* On some vehicles the security indicator may be illuminated for the duration of the 10-minute relearn procedure.

Observe the scan tool, after approximately 10 minutes the scan tool will display "Programming Successful, Turn OFF Ignition". The vehicle is now ready to relearn the key information and/or the passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.

11. Turn OFF the ignition and wait 2 minutes.
12. With a master vehicle key, turn the ignition to the RUN position for 15 seconds, then start the vehicle. The TDM and ECM have now relearned the pre-release password and the challenge/response data.
13. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs.

Is this the only possible way? Thanks for your help again sir. Most help I’ve gotten in months. And a little of a off subject question does the immobilizer module have to be reading a specific ohm reading?

Hi,

The only thing I have for testing is for the immobilizer. Here are those directions: Note that it indicates a diagnostic trouble code, B3976. A basic scan tool is not likely to read such codes.

____________________________

2007 Chevrolet Impala V6-3.5L
Immobilizer
Vehicle ALL Diagnostic Trouble Codes ( DTC ) Testing and Inspection B Code Charts B3976 Immobilizer
IMMOBILIZER
DTC B3976

Diagnostic Instructions

* Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure. See: Vehicle > Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview
* Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
* Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

DTC Descriptor

DTC B3976 46
- Unconfigured Transponder/Vehicle Configuration Not Programmed

Circuit/System Description

When the theft deterrent module (TDM) is in the learn coded key state, the TDM checks the current key to ensure it has been configured as a proper vehicle key.

Conditions for Running the DTC

* Ignition is in the Accessory or Run position.
* The TDM is in the learn coded key state.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The TDM has determined the current key is not configured as a proper vehicle key.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

* The security indicator will be illuminated.
* Vehicle starting will be disabled.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

* A current DTC will be cleared when the TDM detects a properly configured vehicle key.
* A history DTC will be cleared after 100 malfunction-free ignition cycles or when a scan tool is used to clear DTCs.

Circuit/System Verification

Important: When using this diagnostic, more than one vehicle key is required to ensure proper diagnosis. If more than one key is not available at the time of service, contact the customer and ask if any other keys can be provided for service. If unavailable, a new second key can be created.

While viewing DTCs with a scan tool, attempt to start the vehicle using all of the available keys. The vehicle should start with all available keys.

If any key results in inoperative starting and DTC B3976 is set as current, replace the suspect key.

Repair Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure. See: A L L Diagnostic Trouble Codes ( DTC ) > Verification Tests

Replacing Keys

does the immobilizer module have to be reading a specific ohm reading? If so how many times does the copper wire have to be wrapped around or what is the required ohm reading? Last question I have. thanks again Joe.

B3031 is the code that says the system is in the key learning mode. It sounds like you had the module in learn mode when the battery failed. Then putting in the new battery didn't change that. From the description I would have a dealer or shop try to re-flash the programming in the module and then program in the keys. As the battery went flat while you were in the learning mode and you replaced it that may have been the reason why it suddenly started acting strange in the first place, newer cars are very touchy about the battery condition and voltage.

So I’ve replaced anything and everything for the most part.I went through the 30 minute relearn cycle successfully twice now and when it came to the turn that was supposed to fire it up and be completely successful nothing happened, it just clicked and that’s it. so I thought well maybe a fourth time will work but now the light is not turning off again. I didn’t do anything differently since it was turning off and haven’t touched anymore parts. I’ve been working day and night on this piece of junk to no avail. Currently getting evicted over this and just really needing it fixed soon so I can at least have a car to move out with. I have no more money for tow bill or mechanical help and I’m beginning to lose hope. Crazy how something so simple could wreck such havoc on a persons life. Heck, it would’ve been better if someone did steal my car. Thanks GM you’ve done it again!

You will need to use a dealer level scan tool and the access to GM to make all of the system operate.. The 30 minute relearn only works when everything is already initialized and working and you only add a key or change the cylinder. As you have replaced multiple parts that all need to be programmed to work together, the scan tool is the only real option. No DIY way around that. Same routine on all makes and models these days, with some being far worse.
