My alternator got fused. I bought a new one and had it fitted. It is working okay, but at times the charging warning light comes on while driving. After switching off the engine and starting again the battery warning light goes off, but again comes on. One instance the light stayed on for about five minutes while driving. I switched off the engine, but when I tried to start the engine the battery was flat. I waited for two hours and the battery was able to start the engine. The charging warning light is coming on often. What could be the problem?

There are dozens of possible causes for intermittent operation of the charging system. The "Battery" warning light is telling you when the problem is occurring. The goal is to have the charging system tested and diagnosed while the problem is occurring. There is no point in testing anything while the system is working because there is no defect at that time to be found. The new generator could have an internal problem. There could be a corroded connector terminal. We need test results to know where to look for the cause of the problem.
