VW Code: Idle Adaptation At Limit

1996 VW Jetta, 2.0 L, 295,000

Code Reader says P1582. For a VW, that code means "Idle Adaptation At Limit". What the heck does that mean? Could it prevent my car from starting?, because the car won't start. Also reads faulty O2 Sensor and O2 Sensor Circuit.

The throttle body has an electric motor that opens the throttle plate slightly at idle to compensate for low air flow.

It is possible to cause a rough running condition; but, doubtfully a no run condition. You can clean the throttle plate w/ carb cleaner and a rag (use gloves). Carbon is known to build up on the lip of the plate.

I have not seen a no run condition due to the O2 sensor issue (only seen on a vr6 engine).
