Hi all,
I just purchased a 98 altima with 145k miles on it. I recently noticed that the engine is making noise (i.e. i hear the timing chain rolling). So I went to the dealership to find out if it is really the chain. They tell me it's definately the chain making noise and that it's the lower guide part. The quote they gave me for repais is approx. $2000. I don't think i will pay to replace it. But i'm concern about when the chain breaks. Does any one know what kind of symptoms I can notice right before the chain fails? Or how would I know if the timing is off?

Thanks much.

The guides wear on those and make noise. HArd to say when the point of no return is reached. When it does, it will either run like crap, or not start.
