96 Contour that wont move in reverse..AT ALL!!!!

I just picked up a 96 Contour that I was told the tranny was toast. I tried to push in back from the spot it was in to get it on the trailer and couldnt get it to move for NOTHING!!
I had to jack up the front with a floor jack and push it back on the jack. I got it home and got a battery in it and fired it up and found that it drives just fine in drive but nothing in reverse. Its almost like your power brakeing it in reverse. it wont drive or push this way. Its a automatic trans and a 4 cyl eng with 143k miles on it. I have seen several tranny's go out but not freeze up in reverse like this. Can anyone shine some light on this? Is it toast or something Im missing. Even if its toast can you please tell me what might have happened. I have to know now reguardless if its bad or not...lol
Also, I have seen the parking paw break in one automatic trans before and it wouldnt go in reverse either but when you drove forward, you heard a clicking sound from it hitting the slots in the tranny. This one doesnt make any odd noise in drive or reverse.

I have asked around but still nothing...
Cant find anyone that knows wut would freeze this tranny up in reverse like this...
PLEASE HELP.....I REALLY NEED IT!!!!

Okay,

I have asked around (online) and found one person that was able to tell me that its the lock down in the transmission.. Can anyone tell me what this is and how it can lock me up like this? I havent been able to get back in contact with this guy that gave me this info.

My Isuzu Rodeo is doing the same thing but it will move backwards if you push it but to drive it there is nothing. You can here it try and engage but even if you put it to the floor all it does is revs. All other gears work fine. If I find anything out I'll let you know. Maybe are problems are similar.

sounds GREAT.. Same here..

Mine will sound like it is going into gear when you put it in reverse as well and it will nudge forward slightly (something I just noticed) but like yours, it wont move at all with or without gas.. Thanks for the reply.
