Since Halloween, I have not driven my vehicle. It began to idle irregularly and smoke heavily. I have since replaced the spark plugs, spark plug boots, oxygen sensor, and fuel pump. Still the car has a rough idle at start-up. Then again whenever one stops at a traffic signal. It also has a gas smell in the interior and smokes heavily. Any other ideas?

Also I noticed a burn mark underneath the hood coming from below the throttle body. Coincidence maybe?

By the way the car has 137,000 miles.

sounds to me an injector may be leaking, and the vehicle is running rich. the burn mark sounds like it backfired through the throttle body (assuming you have the fuel injected throttle body). is the engine light on? if so i would look into getting the codes scanned and look into a possible leaking injector. good luck

I read that if one takes off the vacuum to the fuel pressure regulator and it leaks gasoline, then the diaphram is broken in the pressure regulator. Since mine did, I am replacing it as we speak. While I'm there I will check out the possibility of a leaking injector.

As I disassembled the car, I found that the area surrounding the injector nearest the drivers' is dirty. Probably not from a leaking injector, but just being an older car. Otherwise the injectors looked fine.

Also the check engine light has never came on, as of yet. I will get back to you if the problem still persists after changing the fuel pressure regulator, and injector seals.

The car runs fine, now that I have replaced the fuel pressure regulator. However, it has another problems. If I just jump in the car and go, the brakes or something seems to lock up and the car seems to lower in the back end and squeal the brakes. Weird eh?
