2001 Sable Emissions Problem

I have a 2001 Sable with the CEL on which has 110,000 miles on it. Occasionally it will go off for 100 miles and then return. Sometimes during idle it will blink off and on and the idle will be rough, but once I start going it will go to steady on. It has a 3.0 24V DOHC 6cylinder engine. The DTC codes are P0401 - insufficient EGR flow and P0304 - cylinder 4 misfire. I replaced the EGR valve and cleaned the attached hoses, replaced all spark plugs with Bosch double platinum plugs, and replaced the back pressure sensor for the EGR valve. Gas mileage is normal. Any suggestions as how to proceed from here would be greatly appreciated.

Do you mean the check engine light?
In today's parlace it's the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL). Did you solve the problem with the parts you relaced? If yes just have the mil shut off somewhere.
If not pull the egr off again and clean the orifice out right thru to the throttl plate, I use a steel coathanger. Then get the light shut off.

You are correct that the Malfunction Indicator Lamp is on. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the advice.[/quote:9e8789613e] I removed the EGR valve, cleaned out the orifice clean back to the throttle plate, and had the MIL reset. The check engine light returned with the same codes. Open for additional advice.

You will need to replace the egr position sensor, cost is about 60.00.

Codes are still P0401 and P0304.

No it's the egr position sensor...It has 2 rubber hoses an an electrical connector, it's located at the top of the engine. It's about 60.00 That will take care of the P0401. P0304 is misfire at cyl 4 it may clear when U fix the sensor. U will need to reset the light again.

U will need to reset the light again.[/quote:4e121c9762] If this is the one with two vacuum hoses(one going to the EGR) and a electrical sensor as well as what appears to be a coil, bolted on with two bolts, I replaced it and it did not help. I am at a loss right now as to what additional things to look for.

no that is the egr solinoid. The one on top of the engine, the two hoses come from the flexible exhaust pipe the egr screws into.
