1999 Questions for all other cars Whining transmission

I have recently noticed (even after short trips,a mile or so) that when I park up there's signs of dark smoke coming out of the hood and a whining sound when I have the engine in gear,could this be a gearbox problem?
I have a Rover 75 1.8 petrol.
