1999 Grand Am - Change Oil Light

My 1999 Grand Am V6, auto, 60K, will not turn off the change oil light. Per the manual you push the [RESET] button in the fuse box by the driver's door. I follow the instructions to the letter but the light will not reset. I've tried disconnecting the battery with no luck. Any thoughts ?

how long did you hold the button down.................sometimes it feels like forever.........hold it down for a minute and see what happens.............you did have the key turned on, right?

I held the reset button down for 90 seconds. No change. It's as if I didn't push the button at all. Yes, Key in the "on" position without the engine running.

Try this:
Turn the ignition key to the on position, within 5 seconds press the accelerator pedal 3 times.

Thanks for the advise but....... it didn't work. I know that is the procedure for some models and I tried it before. But I gave it another try.

Any possibility of a sensor sending a false signal or a way to re-boot the computer?

Still looking for a solution.

I thought maybe it was a split year and that might work.

I'm sure you did this, but recheck anyway:
1-turn ignition to on position, engine off
2-press and release
the reset button.
3- light should be flashing
4-press and hold rest button until audible sound is heard,then release.

You probably did this and it still doesn't work. If true,
you need access to a scan tool-not a code reader.
Check for codes. If any codes are present, trouble shoot them. IF not,
You need to perform the instrument cluster system check, if okay then
slect instrument panel cluster, special functions, lamp test and command the indicator light on and off.
If it didn't work, replace the instrument cluster.

When I hold the [RESET] button it does not flash.

I also have a problem with the fuel gage. I'm sure that problem is with the sending unit in the gas tank. If time permits this weekend I will be replacing the fuel pump & sending unit.

I'll try the scan tool.

Part of the cluster test shows testing the gauge. Just my 2 cents, but I'd go after the cluster test first. It's a lot of work to replace the sender, especially if the problem is with the cluster.

Here you go... After lots of checking it was the [RESET] switch. It pulls out like a fuse, $3.95 for a new one and it's good to go.
