I recently had an injector replaced because it was leaking. I drove about 600 miles and then experienced the car start to race, and smoke out the exhaust. It happened a few times. I took it back to the mechanic and he thought it might be the lift pump or the injection pump. He replaced the lift pump (because it was a lot cheaper) and I have only driven 200 miles so far. I'm not sure the problem is fixed.
Are there other possibilities that would cause this. When I returned to the mechanic he drained the oil and found that there was a gallon of fuel in the crank case. This was getting into the combustion chamber and causing the run away condition. What would allow diesel fuel to get into the crankcase?
