1993 300E 2.8 Benz with auto transmission, 125,000 miles. Transmission went out this morning (short grinding and then no forward motion; reverse is fine). I am assuming it needs the transmission replaced. If I am wrong, please advise. If correct, I have two questions:

1 - Does it matter who does the work? Is there anything special/unusual about MB transmissions that requires a MB specialist or dealer?

2 - Any reason not to use a rebuilt transmission? Am assuming that is all that is practical at this point and do not really want to sink a fortune into the car, although everything else is good and it ought to run a lot longer.

Thanks!

any shop should be able to handle the job , they are a little more expenside parts wise compared to American cars ,but they are made with higher quality parts ,i would have to say with no forward gear the problem is internal , check the fluid level and condition and this may give you an idea , dark and burned is not good , just check around locally before you have it repaired , there are many small shops out there with an a+rep do your homwork and you should not be disappointed

thanks

Thanks -- that is most helpful! Estimates have ranged from $2200-$4000, but I was able to locate a shop that a friend used and which will rebuild the transmission rather than replace. Parts are a little more expensive, as you indicate, but not as bad as I had expected. Here's hoping the Benz will be good for another 100,000 miles!
