I have an old Firebird in pretty good shape with 6cyl engine (orginial) T-top, bright red with 130,000 miles. My grandson is turning 16 and really wants the car. Is there a way to replace the steering column with one that has an airbag?

you could put a air bag in the car, it would be costly. there would be a lot of wiring and mounting of sensors. attaching a diagram of some of the components needed. i would have a professional do it. if done wrong could have air bag go off at wrong time.
