Why does a 1975 el camino have vacuum lines (total= 3 vacuum lines) on the thermostat housing? Are they really needed in the first place? (the car is smog exempt so if they arent needed then i can remove them right?)

The vacuum lines control the operation of timing when the engine is cold. Re-route the vacuum lines to insure you have vortex vacuum to the vacuum advance. It sould be fine.
