1974 Questions for all other cars 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 102K miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
I have been working on a 1974 Triumph TR6 for the past 8 years. The last real problem I seem to have is the starter sometimes doesn't catching the flywheel when attempting to start. I replaced the ignition switch, the relay, and had the starter rebuilt. I know that if it were the flywheel, it would probably miss unltil the flywheel moves to another spot by budging the car a litte while in gear. It eventually turns after about 3-6 turns of the key wihtout me moving the car. Can it be a bad connection between the solenoid and starter?

Hi TR6guy,

No, a faulty flywheel would cause what you described. After a few tries, the starter gears sometimes manages to lock and crank the engine even though the ring gears might be badly worn.

Remove the starter and you can have a look at the ring gears.

KHLow2008,
Thank you, I will remove the starter and have a look at the flywheel teeth.

Hi TR6guy,

Don't forget to look all round the ring gear, so you need to turn the engine manually.
