Engine idling putting on air cleaner cover engine shuts off.

Open air filter on top of carburetor (single barrel , Rochester carburetor) putting cap on carburetor stalls engine.

With the air - gas mixture screw where do you start or with the first setting of the screw how many turns out ?

When I first start, I take the adjusters all the way in and then back out 1.5 turns.

Make sure nothing is blocking the air intake tube and nothing is hitting the choke causing it to close. I realize you most likely already did, but though I would add that in case.
