Engine Mechanical problem
2002 Acura RSX Front Wheel Drive Manual 58150 miles

I am not sure of the engine size - but I went to get my Acura 2002 RSX - Type S appraised, and the appraiser said it had a rod knock when he was driving it around - I did not believe him, but now I have taken it to a mechanic who feels that this is what it is too - without doing to sophisicated of testing, and that due to the complication of getting to the rod in this type of car, it would be best to just put in a replacement engine - otherwise it could cost thousands of dollars to take a part of the engine, or worse, get a brand new one - this is not covered by insurance, any way, that these mechanics could be wrong or that a rod knock goes away in time - of note, the A/C was not working at the time and the car last year was hit by a deer (would that have had an affect on the car causing a rod knock)

Hi there,

If this is a big end bearing, it will not go away, it will get worse to the point that it may destroy the engine very quickly, hitting the deer will have no impact on this, your best option may be a good second hand engine, regardless, if you do not attend to this you will do expensive damage to your engine.

The follow up question 1) Could this be knocking due to expansion of the combustion chamber or rod knocking - I tend to think if it is the first, that it could go away with proper maintenance - that is to say, sometimes unleaded gas was used and not always premium - other than that, this car has not been used as a racing car in any fashion

The mechanic who diagnosed the knock should know the difference between gearing knock and engine ping, i can't hear it so i can't comment, but from what you say in your post, i do feel it is a bearing fault, bur get a scan done to see if you have any unresolved misfire codes.
