89 acura legend water pump

89 Acura legend 177,000 miles 2.7 litter

I let my girlfriend use my car and my water pump went out. She said that the car lost all power and died. So I towed my car from where it died to my house and replaced the water. I made sure that all the timing marks were lined up on both the cam gears and the crank shaft was to dead center before I put the belt back on... Now when I try to start the car it will sound like the will start on to first try and there is a little back fire that comes from the engine. If I try to start it again it just cranks over. Please help, Please!

One of two possibles that I see. One, the timing is still off. Two the plug wires are not located correctly. Easy way to check the timing is to pull plug 1 and insert a long screwdriver. Rotate the engine until it is at the highest point. That is TDC. The T on the camshaft gear should be parallel to the head. That is the correct timing. Plug wires could be off a hole.......

On my 89 legend I replaced the water pump and it won't start. In the repair manual it says to line up the front cam sprocket which has a arrow on it and the head has a line on it. I did that.... The rear one has a tooth that has been ground. So I lined that one up with the mark on the head also.... I also made sure that I was top dead center. I pulled the distributor and made sure that the rotor was pointing at the number one piston. I put the belt on and put everything back together and it still won't start. I went and bought new spark plugs because I thought that was the problem. Could my cams be off? And that's why it isn't starting? How far off would it take for it not to start? Please help. I've been trying to get this thing started for the last 5 days.
