Engine Cooling problem
1996 Acura Integra Front Wheel Drive Manual ? miles
I have a 1991 honda CRX with a 1996 JDM honda integra type-r motor (B18c) I bought it the way it is. There is a temp gage on the instrument cluster as well as an aftermarket one which I assume was added as part of the engine swap upgrade. I have no reason to believe the temp gage on the instrument cluster is not operating properly. it starts out at the bottom of the scale when the car is cold and slowly works its way up to about 40% of the scale after about 15 minutes of run time. However, after my last oil change, the aftermarket gage started to slowly creap up into high temp area and went as high as 255 degrees after about 20 minutes run time. Before the oil change, the aftermarket gage usually settled at around 150 degrees. The factory gage in the dash never indicated a high temp. My question is how can I tell if the car is actuallly overheating or if the gage is just bad? I have a new radiator and I dont suspect it is bad. I would like to rule out the water pump, it is not leaking and I dont know how to test it. If the water pump was bad would my heater still work? the heater does work. Also the top of the radiator does get fairly hot after the car has been running but not boiling hot like the 255 degree indication would imply. the bottom of the radiator stays fairly cool, almost like hot water is present at the top of the radiator but not at the bottom, this is why I suspect the water pump.
