1992 Acura Integra 4 cyl Automatic

My car's been making a grinding noise when I put it in reverse. It only happens 1 out of 5 times, the rest of the time it reverses normal. A noise like Rinnnnnt. I don't chance giving it gas, I just put it in neutral and foot push it. I also have been trying to avoid parking in places where I will have to reverse. It's been doing that for over a month now and I've been managiing to get around and have yet to go to a mechanic.

Can anyone pinpoint exactly what is wrong with it? I have a few ideas in mind... thanks.

Hi Learn For Myself,

Does the gear shift feel loose?
When problem occurred, does wiggling the gear shift slightly forward or back make any changes?

If no to both above, the problem is likely to be trans internal. The reverse fork is not moving far enough to engage fully. This would require a rans rebuild to rectify.
