I'm trying to figure out what is really wrong with my sons car.

The first mechanic thought it was the computer so he took it out and replaced it with another one. The problem remained so he put the original back in. Recommended we go to an Acura dealer for a diagnosis. Here are their results.

CODE PO 300-306 ALL CYLINDERS MISFIRING. DIAGNO SED VEH AND SWAPPED COILS WITH KNOWN GOOD COILS AND MISFIRE WENT AWAY EXCEPT WHEN VEH STARTED COLD. RECOMMEND REPLACE ALL COILS AND PERFORM VALVE ADJUSTMENT.

CODE 01-1 POEN CIRCUIT IN DRIVER AIR BAG, WOULD NEED NEW HARNESS TO START.

2 issues 1) engine 2) airbag

The airbag light has always been an on off issue since he bought it used.

The dealer said it is a wiring problem to the airbag not the bag itself.

I don't know if it is related but the first mechanic tried to swap the air filter with a Honda and it didn't fit so he put the original back on. The original that came with the used car is not the one that would have came with it new. The other owner put on a cold air intake for better performance. The mechanic was trying to put on the Honda filter so that the car would pass smog. A week later the car started having engine problems.

He has had the car for about a year.
Any Ideas?

Thanks

Hi keep it real,

For the misfiring codes occurring when cold, I would suggest checking the fuel pressure.

As valve adjustment was recommended, had it been done? If valve clearance is tight, it would cause misfiring as well.

The air cleaner should not be related to the misfiring but vacumn leakages would. However if there are vacumn leakages, the idling speed would be higher than normal.

For the SRS, Code 1-1 is a fault with the wiring circuit for the driver air bag and the most common cause would be a faulty cable reel under the steering wheel. Are the horns and cruise controls working correctly?

Thanks

You mentioned

He said they are working.

Could it be the seat-belt as in the recall?

UPDATE: I just went out to check the horn and then took the car for a spin. ( I got it running right. It was 1 bad ignition coil.) The cruise control and horn DO NOT WORK. Would a faulty cable reel bring up this code?

No, the horn and cruise control would not trigger the code as they are not related to the SRS.

The cable reel is shared by the SRS, horn and cruise control and symptoms indicates it is bad. You would have to remove the cable reel to test for continuity. SRS components requires careful handling and prior to removal, the battery has to be disconnected and a waiting time of at least 3 mins is needed before commencing on work.

At this point would you guess the air bag is working or not?

Any idea what harness is being referred to in that error message?

Thanks

When the SRS indicator light is turned on, the system is disabled and would not work.

The harness referred to should be the cable reel.

I guess it was the 'most common cause' that i was not sure about.

Others have mentioned a possible passenger seat sensor or seat belt.

The cable reel/SRS reel/clock spring are the same thing right?

Is there a step by step installation for this?

Thanks again

Yes, they mean the same thing.

How can a trouble code for the driver air bag be related to the passenger air bag? Unless the trouble code is not present, then it could be speculated to be anything.

The SRS system should not be attempted without understanding and following safety procedures so make sure you know and understand what you are doing before proceeding.

I will send some files to you.

You have been a great source for help on fixing this problem KHLow2008. The cable reel solved the SRS light and the horn and cruise as well. Thanks for your insight. I hope others will be as fortunate to receive your advice.
