air conditioner compressor smoking

My air conditioner is broken and the compressor needs to be replaced. I do not want to fix it, I plan to trade in the car in a few months when I can afford it for a larger car for my family. The compressor recently started making a smoke smell and actually smoking.
My question is, when will this stop? Is there anything I can do about it besides buy a brand new ac unit? I do not mind going without air conditioning.
Can this cause other damage to the car, or is it only effecting the air conditioner unit?

They make eliminator bracket and pulley for many vehicles. Contact the parts store and see if one is made for your car. The compressor is removed and the pulley and bracket is installed in its place. https://www.2carpros.com/images/external/175308396.jpg

Also, be advised that this vehicle uses what is called stretch belts. The car has no adjustable tensioner and requires a special tool and some talent to remove or install a belt.

The compressor will lock up and leave you stranded on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck.
