A/C on MAX smells like belt is burning. Ruined a brand new A/C clutch in only 6 weeks. Why would it do that?

Hi,

When you can smell the belt burning more than likely it is because a pulley is seized and not spinning. This causes the belt to rub on it and it heats up. Most of the time, this is caused by the compressor being locked up. Most of the other pulleys will be making noise and still spin or just completely fail and wobble. The compressor seizing will lock the pulley when the clutch engages and the belt will eventually break.

When you have it on MAX A/C, the compressor is on consistently and this will cause the belt to heat up quickly.

I would remove the belt and spin the pulley to see what it sounds like. You may not be able to spin it. If this is the case, you may have metal throughout the system and especially the condenser. Let me know what you find and we can go from there. Thanks
