ABS malfunction light flashing?

When applying the brakes a clicking sound, like the teeth on two gears not meshing, occurs. There is also kickback felt in the brake pedal along with a grinding noise when the vehicle comes to a stop. This does not sound like a wheel bearing noise. I was unable to read codes for ABS through the OBDII port. Is this likely the reluctor ring in the sensor or something to do with the 4wd? I've heard of similar issues with Ford 4wd.

Left front is where the noise is.

Hi,

The reluctor ring or sensor shouldn't make a noise when the brakes are applied. However, anything is possible. Have you removed the wheel to inspect the brake pads as well as the wheel bearing for excess play? When you apply the brakes, the caliper, brake pads, and rotor are under strain which could be causing movement and making the noise.

Keep in mind, the wheel bearing and hub assembly includes a magnetic encoder with built-in permanent magnets that the wheel speed sensor senses. Based on your description, I suspect that is where the problem is coming from.

Check at the rear of the steering knuckle where the axle passes through the hub for any evidence of damage or material from the system. See pic below.
