I recently replaced my clutch, when I replaced my motor with a new timing belt, water pump, and tensioner. Put it all back together and everything worked correctly, after driving the car for about twenty minutes I felt a little pop in the clutch pedal and the car would no longer move. Now I can put it in gear, but the car still won’t move. Any ideas?

Good morning,

From your description, it sounds like you have a failed new clutch. Something happened to either the disc or the pressure plate. This video shows how to do the job on a similar car.

https://youtu.be/6N6b5F2ChyE

You will need to remove the transmission again and remove the clutch for inspection.

Okay, is that possibly the only thing it could be? It’s pretty easy to install the pressure plate, so I don’t know how I could’ve messed it up? But heck who knows, anything is possible.

It does not sound like you messed it up. It could just be a defective part.

So I should exchange it for another one?

First, remove it and inspect it for any damage.

Make sure all the bolts were tight securing the pressure plate.

I will tear it down tonight and take a look. Also, another question. With the wheels off the ground, and off the car, If I spun the passenger side CV axle, should the driver side spin as well?

Yes, it should turn the opposite way.

Would it need to be in neutral or in gear for that to happen?

Because I was spinning the axle on the passenger side, the driver side was not spinning.

It would do it in both in gear and out of gear.

Okay it only moves whatever side I turn, so what does that mean? Sorry I’m stumped on this issue.

Focus on the current issue. You need to pull the transmission again and check the clutch.

I could not get the axle out, I was at work and my father got it out for me, and I noticed in the picture he sent me the item circled was on the end of it. I have no clue what it is. I haven’t had a chance to check it out either yet.

It looks like either a washer or the seal for the transaxle but has no effect on your condition.

Okay, that is good news. I am going to try to get back out tonight and finish pulling the drive-train and pull the transmission and inspect everything.

I read the instructions, but my car doesn’t have the key fob with it. Just a regular key. I bought it used in this condition.

Got the motor and transmission out, and this little spring was sitting inside where the axle goes into the transmission.

Everything seemed to be in tact. Clutch disc was in great shape, seeing how it’s brand new and has maybe fifteen miles on it. I noticed when I started pulling the driver side axle, that it already had a gap, like it had popped out a little bit. And the lock ring on the end was twisted and bent and halfway hanging off when I got the axle out. Could that have been my problem all along?

The spring is from the seal. You will need to replace the bulkhead seal.

If the axle was not fully inserted, yes, it could have been the issue.

Were all the bolts tight on the pressure plate? Since you have it out, get another one under warranty to be sure.

I am going to O’reilly’s auto parts, is that the name of the seal?

All bolts were tight. The Lock ring was bent on the driver axle, so I have a replacement. I actually put it back together and dropped it back in the car already, but need to replace the axle seals. Before installing the new axles.

I haven’t gotten them yet, I only ordered them from O’reilly’s. They will be there tomorrow, so I will take the old one out and match them up when I go to pick them up.

The lock ring on the end of the driver side axle was bent when I got it out. I had to cut the axle out, because I couldn’t get it broken loose with a 1/2 inch breaker bar, or air impact. Was a pain! Lol. So I have a new axle, and going to get new seals tomorrow, but the battery in, seals, axles, and see what that does.

Roy, I picked up the seals today, and they look too big to be the axle seals. I was unable to pull the old one out, by chance do you have a part number for them? I have looked everywhere online and can’t even find the seals themselves.

Roy, I got it all back together and back in the car. Now I have to jerk it really hard to put it in reverse. So hard that I feel like I’m going to break the shifter, and I have to use both hands, same taking it out of reverse. I have no clue what is going on now.. if I don’t jerk it really hard, and just normal, it feels like it goes in, but then when I let out of the clutch it starts to grind... I am almost ready to scrap the car...

Help! I also forgot to add that I did change the transmission fluid and it is full. The only gear I have this problem with is reverse, and it was fine before everything was pulled to check the clutch and everything else

Is it difficult to put into first gear as well? If so it sounds like you have a warped clutch disc not allowing the gears to be changed. here is a guide that can help:

Please run down this guide and report back.

No reverse is the only gear I am having issues with. I can’t get it to go in smoothly at all. No matter if I go from first to reverse or not. With the car on and off I have to slam it really hard.

Not until the transmission is inspected internally.
