4x4 front axle not engaging?

So there's a vacuum leak. I fixed it once. Now there must be a new one. I don't have time to fix it before the Armageddon snow storm moving in today. So I pulled the cable from the front axle actuator, locked it with a pair of vice grips, and voila, it works! The question is can leave it locked and simply switch the 4x4 on and off for a while? I've heard that I can but don't necessarily trust the source. I don't want to have to replace the transfer case because of bad Intel.

You should be okay once the 4x4 is engaged. I would check the fuses for the system, here is a guide to help and the 5 fuses you need to check in the images below.

It was working and disengaged, leaving me stuck in snow and ice. Very annoying. What I'm asking is if I can leave the cable engaged via vice grips for now but only hit the 4x4 switch when needed. I'll add a pic for clarity if it helps. When I pull and lock the grips and hit the 4x4 button it works as it should (other than needing to be manually engaged).

Yes you can keep it locked in, The only thing with it engaged full time is that it can increase tire wear slightly and because it now keeps the front differential turning you might see marginal wear on those parts. Keeping it locked in on that axle design is no different than keeping the hubs engaged on mechanical hub vehicles and shifting the T-Case in and out as needed. You can get a manual cable that does the same thing. Basically a pull cable like a throttle that locks. I had one on my responder Blazer for winter use.
