Whipple is a company that makes screw type superchargers. They are basically an air pump that draws in air and pushes it into the engines intake manifold. As it does this it compresses the air in the intake. This gives you higher performance due to more air being packed into a cylinder when the intake valve opens.
The capacity is nothing more than how much air the units can move. It does not add that to the engine. A 5.0 is still a 5.0.

The liter measurement (2.3L, 4.0L, etc.) represents the amount of air that the supercharger displaces per revolution.

2.3L Superchargers: for moderate boost and daily driving applications.

4.0L Superchargers: Designed for high boost, racing, or high-performance builds where you want maximum power output.
