2wd grinding noise

Is there a way to get a recording of the noise? More than likely there is a failure in the transfer case if I am understanding this correctly. If the vehicle does not move in 2WD and grinds but does move in 4WD and makes no grinding noise, this seems as though the gearing in the transfer case is the issue.

I am not one to like forums but I have heard of this in the past and did a quick search and there are a number of forums out there and they are confirming what I am saying that they had the T-case rebuilt or replaced and it corrected the noise.

Please let me know if I am missing something but again, this is the only thing that makes sense to me.

Wow. That is not a good noise.

Just so I am clear, this does not make the noise in 4WD? If this is the case, then it would not be the rear diff. The rear diff spins all the time in both 2 and 4 WD so I would expect it to make it all the time.

The way to verify this is to remove the rear drive shaft. However, this is a bearing that has failed and more than likely the output of the T case has stripped.

I would suggest just lifting the rear wheels and getting under the truck and see where you hear this coming from. I imagine you can put your hand on the transfer case and transmission and feel this noise.

I am suspecting the transfer case is the issue.

Just in 2wd i can drive in 4wd.

Okay. It could be the rear end but that should be relatively easy to determine if you lift the rear end and run the vehicle in 2WD. Let us know what you find. Thanks

Does the truck move at all?

Does the speedometer work during this noise?

This could be either a transfer case issue or a differential issue.
