I have a tdci. I have a tapping noise when warm and on cold starts hard starting with smoke. had belt off but noise still present.

Hard cold starting with smoking in a diesel is usually a sign of failed glow plug(s). Those are best replaced as a full set to ensure you do not have a marginal one left installed.
The tapping could be just about anything. You would need to use a mechanics stethoscope to try to narrow down if it is in the top end of the engine and valve/cam related or if it is rod/main or wrist pin related in the bottom end.
