Abnormal noises should not be normal for any vehicle. Being a new vehicle, bring it to the attention of the dealer.

The noise is most probably from the valve lifters.

Intermittent noise problems are at times difficult to diagnose and if it is a technical problem, most probably their technical service department should have the necessary information to resolve the problem.

Too bad you have to go through this after buying a new car.

Letter from the dealers about annoying ticking noise:
We at Cockram Kia have inspected your Kia Rio for the ticking noise after cold engine start up and after testing several similar Kia vehicles of the same model variant find that this is a characteristic within this model variant rather than a individual vehicle fault .

We are satisfied that no mechanical fault exists with your Kia vehicle and we consider the condition complained of as a characteristic of the model variant.

Your vehicle is covered by a 5 year/ 100km warranty and we will stand by the product should any engine failure occur [provided all maintenance requirements have been completed as outline by the manufacture].

Any problems please feel free to contact me

Now that they have given you a written acknowledgement of the problem, apart from the discomfort/annoyance, there is nothing you need to worry about.

If anything goes wrong, you have something to fall back on.

Happy motoring.

I had a ticking problem in my engine that was real loud. The dealership recommended a tear down to find source of noise. the service manager told me about a kerosine flush as he believed the lifters were sticking becuase of sludge.

I did the kerosine flush at another mechanics, the noise was still there and the mechanic told me the motor was bad. I took it home and only drove it about 3 miles a day for a week. I took it to another mechanic about a week later to get some info on the motor. On the way there the car drove normal and the ticking noise was gone. The mechanic told me it sounded completly normal. I called the service manager at Kia and he told me to do another oil change to make sure all the kerosine was out. I did that and used a high grade syntheic oil. Its only been about 70 miles but the car has been good so far. Should I worry about anymore after affects or drive the car as normal and keep up with oil changes?

Chances are the flush helped. Keep up with the oil changes every 3K and it should be fine.

First off your going to have to identify what is leaking, if it is oil, the leak needs to be found and repaired, Second, the ticking noise would be hard to identify over the computer, unless you have pinpointed the area it is coming from, My best advice would be to take it in to a repair shop and have it looked at,
