The security system would not do that on that car. Sounds like you have corrosion or a bad connection/loose connection.

It sounds like you have a bad starter motor. We need to check the trigger wire at the starter to see if it is getting power while in the crank position. Check out this guide toward the bottom to see how to test the starter

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/car-cranks-but-wont-start

and if the starter tests bad this guide will give you an idea of what it will take to fix it.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-replace-a-starter-motor

You will need to raise the car up safely.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/jack-up-and-lift-your-car-safely

Here are some diagrams to show you how on your car. (below)

Please let us know what happens.

Cheers, Ken

It sound like the starter contacts are not connecting. I would confirm the failure by using a test light on the starter trigger wire (small) if you have power the starter is no good here is a guide to help you see what you are in for when doing the job.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what you find.

Cheers

I went to crank the car, and there was no response. Then, after trying a few more times, the car's blinkers and wipers began to function irratically. I' trying to diagnose the problem and I'm not sure where to begin?

If the car is not cranking over then you need to see if you are getting power to your starter when you are trying to crank your vehicle. Also check your battery, cables, and connections.

I drive a TDI. Have been having problems getting it to start when it's cold out, especially when it's in the low 30's in the morning. It can take me up to 40 times turning the key to get it to start. When it's not as cold, can take me up to 2 to 6 tries. The radio comes on, and the vent, when I turn the key, but the car does not turn over (no crank). I have turned the key so that the radio is on for a minute, and then try to start again, per someone's suggestion, but have not had luck with that. I had the battery replaced, mechanic said the glow plug is fine. He thought it was the ignition switch, but when I brought it in, he said the battery cable main Terminal 30 wire was loose, tightened, load tested charging system OK, and not other electrical issues were detected, but the next morning I had the same problem again. When I leave the car in the garage, I have no problem starting it. After I have started the car in the morning when it's cold, I have no problem getting it to start for the rest of the day. I bring it in for regular oil changes, just had the R&R intake manifold cleaned out with new interior filters because of sluggish performance.

If it does not crank, do not waste your time looking at the glow plugs or intake manifold.

On your vehicle a very common problem is that the ignition switch overheats and melts the wires/connector underneath the steering wheel.

Another common issue is that the starter solenoid wire sometimes breaks or has a loose contact. When the vehicle does not crank, I would remove the solenoid signal connector and test to see if you have proper voltage there.

My engine will turn over and start but dies after 5 mins of driving and there is a cloud of white smoke coming out of my tail pipe. What would be the problem?

cloud of white smoke , if its not due to condensation from a cold start could be coolant leaking into the cylinders.

Get it block and pressure tested to find out more.

Do you have an aftermarket alarm or factory alarm?

If its factory, close all the doors, lock then un lock the vehicle. And try starting it
