when I try to start my car in the morning it revs but doesn't turn over. I try to use my automatic start and it will turn over then shut off. Next I take out my push start button and insert my key and after 2-3 times it finally turn over. I have also noticed that my cruise control wont work. I got my battery tested it is fine.

Hello,

It sounds like you have a starter motor that is going out but to be sure here is a guide to confirm the failure.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/starter-not-working-repair

Hee is how you replace the starter in case you find using the guide it is the problem. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is. You will need to remove the engine mount.

First you have to determine if it really is the fuel pump. You should hear it hum for one second after turning on the ignition switch. If you do not hear it, cycle the ignition switch one or two more times. If it suddenly does start to run, the impeller is most likely starting to lock up due to microscopic debris in the gas tank. It's common for four or five replacement pumps to do that in a row. By that time the debris has been collected and the next one will be okay. The fix is to have the tank steam-cleaned at a radiator repair shop.

If you do hear the pump run for one second but the engine doesn't start, check for spark first. If spark is missing, the fuel pump won't run either during cranking.

Hi:
The clicking indicates a dead battery. If it wouldn't jump, your battery must be really dead or you didn't make a good enough connection.

It started just fine this morning, turned the car off, then it would not turn back over. It Kept flashing the oil pressure sensor, replaced that. Now relays just keep tripping, so it will not even try to crank. Help please!

Hey SKYTUNES,

It sounds like you have a bad battery. I would check the oil level as well. Here is a guide to check the battery:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/car-battery-load-test

Please run this test and get back to us so we can continue helping you.

If the security light is not flashing when you are cranking it over try starting the truck and smack body of starter with a hammer if it starts it's the starter.

Here is a guide to help you.

Here are diagrams to help you (below)

Please let us know what you find.

Cheers

we have replaced the starter relay. Well we went over ,I put the starter back in, installed a new battery, tried to start it an we could hear that the starter was buzzing but not able to move like the engine was locked. so I loosened the starter thinking the teeth were not lined up right and she tried to bump the starter to turn the teeth a bit an the alarm sounded off now it wont let the starter even move. the manual can help us reset the security? cuz thats what we're thinking is preventing it from starting all before I read your post about the neutral start. It was the gear shift position sensor that was out. all fixed now.

I dont have a clue. I am not with the car. I was reading the fuel pump is electric so maybe a fuse. The truck was getting hot and then the brakes where going away and then it got real hard to steer. Once it cool off and water was put in the car it would turn over and over but not crank

I think you have two seperate problems. If it was heating up and you were losing power assist to the steering, that sounds like a loose belt. As far as the engine, here is a how to for checking fuel pump pressure. Check it and let me know what you find.

You will need a fuel pressure gauge. Most parts stores will lend or rent them to you.

Let me know what you find.

When the key is turned all the way forward it hesitates to start like it's turning over, it always starts when you let go but it seems to be trying to get the right amount of fuel, because it will rev way up to 2000 RPM's and go down to 800 RPM's then back up to 1500 RPM's then it evens out and idles at about 500 RPM's. It runs really good after it finally evens out. Please help it is so frustrating. It's like sometimes if i start it just right it's fine, but it is super picky how it is started.

Has the check engine light come on? Have you checked for vacuum leaks? Finally, has the fuel pump pressure ever been tested?

Starter relay, solenoid or motor. Battery cables shorted or sulfiated battery cell. ignitin switch or neutral safety switch are a few reasons.

Way too much information.

Do you hear a click under the hood when you turn the ignition switch to "crank"? That would be the starter relay doing what it's supposed to do.

Do you hear a loud single "clunk" each time you turn the key? That would be the solenoid on the starter motor doing what it's supposed to do. A common problem is worn solenoid contacts. It's an easy inexpensive repair to replace them, but they never fail completely at first. If you hear this loud clunk, keep cycling the key to the crank position. Eventually it will crank. This problem will get worse over time until, as in the case of my mother's van, it did finally start, but she lost count after 700 attempts and a blister on her thumb!

If you don't hear a loud clunk, turn on the headlights and try starting it again. If you see the headlights get very dim while trying to crank the engine, the battery is discharged, has a shorted cell, or the cables are loose or have corrosion between them and the battery posts.

The last thing is to put the gearshift in neutral and try cranking it. If that works, either the shifter linkage is out of adjustment or the neutral safety switch is defective. The linkage is rarely an issue unless someone had it apart for some other reason. Also, your vehicle might use a shifter sensor instead of the older neutral safety switch.

Dodge Durango 2000 won't start from one minute to the next.
Engine won't crank. I turn the key and nothing happens. No lights etc. a few times, when inserted key, ipod began to charge and the overhead lights came on for minute or so, but very dim and then wouldn't go back on after took key out and tried again to crank the engine. It was running fine. Went into a store to buy supper and tried to start and literally nothing happened. What's going on? Thanks for any help

I would check the battery cables. The positive runs from the post to the strter and the negative from the post to the engine block. Make sure they are tight and are corrosion free with good metal to metal contact.

You should also test the battery , if you have a multi-meter, yourself or Advance Auto or Auto Zone can test it for you.

You need to test the voltage when it is sitting and the voltage when under load. So it shoudl have 12 volts sitting unless you just drove it it should have more up to 14.4. It shoudl read 13.0 to 14.41 volts with engine running.
To test under load, first check the voltage with all accesories on. It should not drop below 12.0 volts. Then see what the voltage is with and without accesories when the key is turned. It should not drop, a tenth of a volt is okay, but any major drop in voltage means the battery has a bad cell.

Other than that, I would suggest going the the afolrementioned auto parts stores and having them pull the trouble codes. They will both do it for free. This will give you leads as to any electrical issues that are happening that might be causing the problem.
