will only go in reverse

First connected a codes reader to it to see if you have any codes that will let you know that a transmission speed sensor or control solenoid has gone out.

It sounds like you have a 1st gear shift solenoid that needs to be replaced, you will need to remove the transmission pan to do so.

You where spot on, it was the solenoid I replaced it and now the car runs like new.
