oil filter cover removal

Yes, this problem is very normal, the dealer has those oil filter caps stacked up. Tap it with a hammer to shock it,, but not too hard, Here is a video of the job being done on a similar car.

Be careful with that hammer on the plastic. The issue is the "O" ring getting dry and not lubricated and making it stick to the housing .Even if you get it to turn, it's not going to suddenly spin off by hand. It is going to turn hard unto the "O" ring clears the housing. Put some oil or silicone grease on the oil ring before going back in. I recommend a socket with a long breaker bar. make sure you have the right socket. This socket should have slots in it.

Engine should be warm to very warm when changing oil.

Get filter and oil in advance, get some nitrile gloves and a drain container. Put container under pan, use a 6pt socket to remove pan bolt, drain oil, remove filter with a cup type filter wrench.
Coat rubber seal of filter with engine oil screw filter in by hand and tighted 1 turn by hand after seal contact.
After oil drains, install plug, do not overtighten.

It is best to fill the filter with oil before install, add oil to engine, start and let run for 2 minutes, check for leaks, check level and add to full mark. DO NOT OVERFILL.

Space is scarce for most models nowadays and you would need the cap-on type of filter wrench for most vehicles. The chain or clamp ring type oil filter wrench is not applicable for this vehicle.

2009 Corolla has a cartridge oil filter,with an o-ring.Whats the trick to replacing it at home by a do-it-yourselfer?????

This filter housing have a special cup that fits over the housing to remove it, without this cup or socket you can cause damage to the housing.

However, I will tell you a way to get it off, but I do not recommend doing this by any means and you can break the housing off if the filter is on too tight or if you continue to use this method.

The filter has two tabs that sticks out, you can get a BLUNT chisel or punch and a hammer and lightly hit both tabs until the filter starts to loosen off. Keep in mind when you re-install the filter, you do not have to really tighten the filter that tight, it's only torqued to 25 nm. Usually a slight tap with the punch will torque it tight enough to stop a leak.

I hope this helps, but really, you should purchase the socket for the cartridge.

Had the same question. Went down to the Toyota dealer and got the socket. I believe it was either a 64 or 65 mm with 14 flanges. Total cost: $6.50 plus California's new higher tax :)
