This sounds like a way to get you to spend a little more money for an oil change. Synthetic is better but not needed. If the manual says you need to use it then I would because that is what the vehicle was built to use. However, it cannot void your warranty. I have been involved in many court cases and as long as you are using the correct weight and changing the oil on the proper intervals for that oil then you cannot deny it legally. The dealer or OEM can try to deny it but the court will not uphold that.
The key is, if you chose not to use synthetic then you need to change the oil at the proper intervals for that oil. Synthetic oil can last a lot longer so if you don't use it but use its intervals then your engine will fail and they can deny it for lack of maintenance and it will have nothing to do with what oil it was. Meaning they are not denying because you didn't use the right oil. They are denying because you didn't maintain it properly.
