Inconsistent starting

My van has problems when starting. When I first start the van, I turn the key and it turns longer than it should before it starts. If I start it again shortly after I get done driving, it starts up right away as it normally should. I poured a bottle of fuel injector cleaner, hoping it would be as simple as cleaning the fuel injectors but it did not help. Do you have any idea what would cause this inconsistency with starting?

Hi,

What you described sounds like fuel pressure drop off. I want you to try something and let me know what happens. This is really simple to do. Try it when the vehicle would normally have a delayed start and see if it changes things.

1) Turn the key from off to the on position (engine off) and count to 5.
2) Turn the key off and repeat step 1 three more times.
3) on the fifth cycle, see if it starts normally.

Hi,

I followed the procedure you listed. Once I reached the fifth time of the cycle, it started like it normally should. It wasn't like if I tried to start it on the first try where it would turn over and have a delayed start. What would cause a fuel pressure drop?

Hi,

I had a feeling that was the cause. There could be a few things that can cause it. A fuel leak, a leaking fuel injector, a faulty one way valve on the pump and so on.

When this happens, have you ever noticed black smoke from the exhaust? Does it ever run rough at first when it happens?

Let me know. If that isn't happening, then chances are the pump may be allowing fuel pressure to drop. Here is a link that shows how to check fuel pressure and drop off. I can help you through the test if you would like. As far as the pressure gauge that is needed for the test, I realize most people don't own one. However, often times a parts store will lend one to you for testing.
