2009 Jetta TDI ran out of fuel. Told I have air in fuel lines/system that must be purged. How is this done?

2009 Jetta TDI has never given any fuel problems and is in otherwise perfect condition.

that is correct. you have to get the air out of the system before it will come back on line.

do you have any expierence in working on these??

Cycle the ignition switch on for 2 seconds a few times and try starting. Might be a little difficult to start initially.

Turning ignition on and off for 2 seconds did not help.

You need to crank the engine for a longer time. It has an electrical pump that should self-prime.

Disconnect the hose and turn igniton on to test if it is priming.

Btw have you checked the fuses?

You might need a scan tool such as VCDS to run a "purge/bleed" cycle
that can not be achieved via regular key cycle / cranking.

Removed the hose. Upon starting fuel was forced out of the hose.

Ok, so that means the priming is good and you would have to do as suggested by Thomas since basic procedures do not work.
