I own a Toyota Corolla 2009. The maintenance required light is on. I don't know why. I have heard that it may just need an oil change or that they have it go on every 5000 miles just to get you into the shop. Can you tell why that light goes on? Thank you. Audrey

Take the vehicle to a nationally recognized parts store and have them scan the computer for trouble codes. Most will do it for free.

Let me know what you find.

The maintenance required light continues to stay on the dash after I have changed the oil and followed the instructions in the car manual to reset the light. The instructions are to hold down the mileage trip button with the ignition in the lock or acc position for more than 5 seconds then the light should go off. I have attempeted this several times with no success. I even pulled the fuse to see if it would reset but no luck.

Any suggestions?

1. To reset MAINT reminder light after engine oil replacement, turn ignition switch to OFF position with odometer reading showing. Turn ignition switch to ON position while holding down trip meter RESET button.
2. Hold trip meter RESET button down for at least 5 seconds. Odometer should indicate "000000" and MAINT reminder light goes out.

Try this sequence.

Turn ignition key to 'ON' and press the odometer button until the display reads ODO... not Trip A or B.
Turn ignition key to OFF.
Hold in the same button you used in step 1.
While holding the button in, turn ignition key to 'ON'.

ODOMETER will change to
5 dashes - - - - -
Then 4 dashes - - - -
Then 3 dashes - - -
Then 2 dashes - -
Then 1 dash -
THEN all zeros 0 0 0 0 0
Then back to the correct mileage
The Maintenance Required light should blink and go out.

Check your owners manual. It will give instructions on resetting the light.

NEVER open the radiator cap, unless the engine is cold.

At 16K probably an oil change and check all fluid levels, inspect for leaks etc. You really need an owners manual. Try ebay, you can get owners manuals there sometimes. I have seen manuals for 2005 Toyota's, just can't remember the model.

Reset procedures depend on if vehicle is equipped with "smart key" system or not.

Reset procedure is in owners manual.

If you do not have owners manual, repost to this thread and let me know if equipped with smart key or not.

If it is a light to remind you to change the oil, just reset it. If the check engine light is on, have the computer scanned to identify trouble codes.

They are all different. If it is the oil change light, refer to your owner's manual for specific directions for your vehicle.

I bought a 2006 Corolla in March of this year. It has been running great, but when it was time for my second oil change, the maintenance required light started flashing when I started the car and then when turn off. So I got my oil changed a month ago and the light hasn't stopped. And recently it has come on and stayed on when I start the car. Is there a certain trick to turning it off, or is my sensor stuck? Please help.

On most new cars, these maintenance lights are designed to come on after a certain amount of miles are driven, pre-determined by the manufacturers. Some are designed to flash occassionaly until you reach the the breaking point, then it stays on. To re-set the lite, press the reset button on the dash FIRST, then turn the ignition key to the ON position and wait 10 second or until the lite goes out. The reset button is near the speedometer gauge.
