My vehicle has noises from the engine area since early spring. Especially upon a cold start the engine has this zzzzzzzz sort of sound when climbing or accelerating. ATF and spark plug change did not fix it.
This video has all the noises. First ones sounds like belt noise. Later recordings are from the car accelerating, especially cold start:

Many thanks for any ideas you may have!

Welcome to 2CarPros.

Honestly, it sounds like the power steering pump. Does the sound change when turning? Have you remove the belt and started the car for a couple seconds to see if the noise is gone?

Listening to the video, I suspect either the power steering pump or the alternator is making noise. If you have an automotive stethoscope, see if that is where the noise is coming from and let me know.

Also, I would remove the belt and start it for a couple seconds just to see if the sound is gone. At that time, I would check each of the belt driven accessories for bearing issues.

Let me know,
Joe

Thank you very much for the timely and informative reply, Joe! I have not done anything with the serpentine belt; the only reason I suspected it was reading of online posts, and the noise at idle. I try fix my own toys but I am very ignorant at this stage. Did you think the belt is any likely to be the culprit at all without considering my poor guess?

About noise when turning, generally no, except [1] I have heared the same noise as expected from accelerating, when turning left at intersections, but you know I had to press the accelerator in these cases:) [2] occasional squeaking from the steering wheel when I am frantically parking.

Tldr I did not find any correlation in that “ engine “noise and steering action.

The noise upon acceleration was worse earlier in the year when it was colder, but still shows occasionally now. (( Back then the engine power also felt inadequate simultaneously, hence the plug and ATF change at 150,000 km. Power issue was fixed but noise remained)). I drove to my mechanic 15,000 away one morning and by the time I reached him the noise was all gone.

Welcome back:

First, check to make sure the power steering fluid is full. As far as the belt itself, it sounds like a whine in the video, and a belt, in and of itself, won't do that. I think you have a bearing going bad in one of the components or the power steering fluid is low. If you can, carefully check using an automotive stethoscope to see if you can hear which component is making the noise. Or, remove the belt and start the engine only for a couple seconds to see if the sound is gone. If it is, then check each of the belt driven accessories to make sure there isn't a bearing going bad in one of them.

By the way, you can get a stethoscope at any parts store. They are very inexpensive. Usually under $10.00. Just be careful when using it not to touch any moving parts.

Let me know what you find.

Thanks Joe!
Today I went to local mechanics chain because the disassembly looks daunting to me. By the time I drove to the place (10-15 minutes) the noise was gone and after looking at it for an hour including test drive the mechanic found nothing and said "come back when it's actually noisy" (lol) and suspected one of the engine fixtures was loose.
Guess I'll have to wait for a cold morning with stethoscope.

Welcome back:

It seems when something is warming up, the noise goes away. The stethoscope is the best way to identify where the noise is coming from. See that, you'll be a doctor of motors. LOL

If you can, please keep me in the loop so I can help. Feel free to ask as many questions as you have.

Take care,
Joe

Would you think it's the engine oil? it is not due for a change but it's dark brown, smell burnt a little, and only just reaches above the lowest of the three holes on the stick.

Welcome back:

No, as long as the oil is in the safe range, you are fine. Also, it wouldn't cause this type of noise.

Take care,
Joe

The alternator belt broke now cannot see how it goes on. It will not go on the very last pulley because the timing chain thing has a metal little plate hanging over. the belt will not fit under that . Do you have a picture of what pulleys it goes on? It is not a big belt.
