When replacing a timing belt on some vehicles, why do you need to mark the old timing belt and match the marks on the new timing belt? I was watching some videos and it seems like some mechanics not only line up the marks from the cam(s) and crankshaft but also the belt. I don't understand why some mark the timing belt itself, is there a different teeth on the belt that lines up on the cam or crank?

Thanks,
Eric.

you need to line up cam and crank timing marks or whatever your specific vehicle calls for not the belt. the people on you tube may not be mechanics. A chain however is different

I also saw some customers that bought the timing belt and the new belt came with marks on the belt from the manufacturer. Is the purpose of the marks on the new belt make it easier to line up with the crank and cam and other timing marks?
