2008 Nissan X-Trail Cant open door

Passenger inside door handle cable nipped. Was told it was easy to remove/replace cable. Removed cable from lock but now neither handle works and cant get the door open! Mechanic says he may have to try to bust the lock inside the door? Is this the best idea?

if you can pull door panel off which most you can but isn't easy with door closed and reach in and see if rod is still connected at arrow lift up and door should open then you can replace what is broken. the clip on rod may have come off or broke. this pic is off a rogue because we do not have xtrail in u.s. but is very similar if not the same.
