Sometimes the mass air flow sensor become coat on the small wire element in the intake tube running from the air filter to the throttle body. Most auto part supplier carry an aerosol spray (mass air flow sensor cleaner) designed to clean these wire elements to increase sensitivity. Because the build up that coats the sensor acts as a insulator reducing it's sensitivity. This spray doesn't always work but most of the time it helps to improve the sensor.
It sounds like you have a weak fuel pump, clogged catalytic converter or a bad MAF or MAP sensor but to be sure we should run the codes by checking out this guide.

Some vehicle's you can disconnect the Mass air flow sensor and attempt to drive the vehicle to see if I improves any. If it runs normal then you know the issue is the mass air flow sensor. Disconnecting this sensor WILL cause the check engine light to come on because the vehicle's computer has detected an issue with the sensor. Usually disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes will erase the check engine light or a scan tool to clear the code. Hope this helps, let me know.
