Sometime in the summer my engine light started up without any 'real' noticeable problems but with time, I've tried several things overall to fix the problem. When a mechanic scanned my car, they said that it was a problem with the cooling system, so I switched the thermostat (for a new factory one) and the sensor that accompanies it. This helped slightly, and for a while, it was better, but again the problem has returned. THe heater works quite well, and the vehicle works well the majority of the time. Since it's winter in Canada, it has to withstand -50 degree (celcius) weather, so sometimes when I start it, it'll idle around 3000-4000 rpms. Does anyone have a similar problem? Help?

You just cant go disabling things the light will stay on.From what i have seen usually the coolant temp sensor sets that code. What the code is saying is there is too great of a difference between the transmission temp verus the coolant temp after a certain amount of running.

I had a diagnostic done. This is my wife's car now. I do not want to leave her and the baby stranded. These are the readings the diagnostic gave:
Open or short circuit condition
Poor electrical connection
Faulty EVAP vent valve
Are any of these costly? May I repair any of these myself? Could any of these leave my wife stranded?

They sound related. Chances are the connection the evap valve is loose or corroded causing the problem, or there is a broken or damaged wire to it. I would recommend having it looked at by a mechanic to determine the exact cause. Honestly, it shouldn't be too much money to repair, but make sure to get a quote prior to the repair.

Also, if I am correct, this problem shouldn't leave her stranded. It will, however, cause the vehicle to fail emissions inspection if you live in an area that requires it.

I just recieved a check engine light and took the card to autozone to have them perform a check engine test. The codes that came back were P0171 and P0170??? the most common problems were Syst too lean, faulty EVAP MAF, Ignition misfire repair, Blocked injectors, Ignition syst fault, fuel syst fault???

Lean fuel condition could be caused by one of the following below:

1.Vacuum leaks
2.EGR and PCV valve.
3.Low fuel pressure.
4.Dirty fuel injectors.
5.Mass Air Flow Sensor.
6.Oxygen Sensor.

The first thing you need to do is have the car scanned for codes let me know the exact code numbers you have not code descriptions.Without them cant tell you much.

2004 Hyundai Tiburon 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 60K mi miles

Today, my 2004 Hyundai Tiburon had the check engine light come on. I couldn't help but notice it happened at the same time that my rear windshield wiper makes a clicking noise when turned on. The wiper still works fine, but right when engaged it makes one loud click. Any ideas?

What I need you to do is have the computer scanned. If the check engine light is on, there is a trouble code stored in the computer that will help identify where the problem is coming from. Have that done and let me know what you find. Note: Most nationally recognized parts stores will scan the computer for free.

The codes are the cause of the pump tripping and might cause difficult starting after refuelling.

It could be a faulty solenoid that would not be too difficult to repair but if it is due to clogged vacuum hoses of the EVAP system, that might take some time which means it might cost a few labor hours.

hi, it could be 101 things, the only way to be sure is to bring it to autozone or your local parts place, and have it scanned, jot down the trouble codes and bring them to me for further diagnosis

Malfunction Indicator light is on.

When putting fuel in the fuel tank, the gas wants to back siphon up anbd out of the fill tube neck.

What would be the most likely cause of this problem.

need to have trouble code(s) retrieved since the light is on, but most likely its a fuel tank vapor venting issue

Hi,

I have been fighting this problem for a month or so. I swapped my fried tib motor with a newer Sonota motor and now I cannot get the check engine light to turn off.

First, I had a p0031 code for the O2 sensor bank1. The car ran very good though. It turns out that I had the signal wire connected wrong for the O2 sensor. Once this was fixed, the car runs very bad now.

With the o2 sensor connected correctly, I have very poor acceleration until around 3k rpms where the car will pick up nicely. It idles roughly around 500 rpms. There are 6 codes now: p1166, p300, p301, p303, p305, p174.

If I disconnect the o2 sensor, the car will run fine and of course throw the p0031 code. I have cleaned the MAF sensor and replaced the PCV valve. If I spray starting fluid around the air intake and manifold, there is no idle acceleration.

At this point, I do not know what else to check.

Thanks,

Shawn

No...the one in there now is after market. I replaced the OEM sensor thinking that was the issue. The behavior was identical with both the OEM and after market sensors.

I got the wiring color code from the dealership last week, so I am confident it is connected correctly. And all the voltages seem correct.

I have an 03 hyundai tib. GT with a 6-speed manual in it. The speedometer doesn't work (neither do the odometer or cruise control) and the previous owner replaced the trans sensor twice. The speedometer sometimes works for a while (during which time the odometer and cruise work), then flutters around, then just drops and stops working. ABS light randomly comes on as well, previous owner replaced the front right sensor and that seemed to help, the light flickers on and off whenever it feels like it. When gas is low the gauge floats between empty and wherever it actually is, previous owner thought it was a bad float. Check engine light is on due to an emissions code, and recently has started throwing a crank cam code, I don't know the number but it sounds like a bad crank sensor - Sometimes the RPMs will drop but if you are idling it will die but then start back up. If not it just drops out for about half a second, then until you shut the car off and let the computer reset it wont go above 3k RPMs, gimp mode I think, but it stops once you restart the car. It is also leaking a bit of oil from the exhaust gasket

scan for codes to see what is wrong first. have a pro do it it may be a bad dash which can be rebuilt. check for vacuum leaks and check fuel pressure with a gauge auto parts rent it . oil leaking onto manifold may be valve cover or a head gasket leak or coming from another area working it's way down like at back or front of engine. it's up to you what is wrong with car an dhow much to fix.

The "check engine" light is an indicator for a system that monitors many electronic functions in the system, also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and can lead to further component or engine damage and some are emissions related not as serious but still a problem and need to be repaired.

Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retrieve the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will give you specific information about what the computer saw and will get you pointed in the right direction to find your problem. With a 1996 or newer and some 95 cars and you have an AutoZone or Advanced auto parts in your area, they will read them for free. Once you have these code numbers, we can be a lot more specific about what your problem may be.

I just recently got the engine light on the car come on.
Scanner indicated P1124. ( Fuel trim error-System Lean)
This just happened all of a sudden.

Now the car runs fine. At high speed, no problems, when the car is say idlling,
or stuck in stop and go traffic, the light comes on again.
The rpm needle is at a constant speed, it doesn't go up and down.
When in the car, you can feel that the idling is not smooth, it's slightly rough, very hard to notice.
Out of the rear tailpipe you can hear the engine misfiring or some sort, or rough idling.

Is the p1124 , the actual sensor that's bad, or it could be other sensors that might be bad, and triggering the p1124 code?
and where is the sensor located for the p1124 code?

Some causes listed where:
low fuel pressure
failed fuel pump
Vaccuum leak

Could it be any of those listed above?

I'm not even sure where to start, any ideas?

Go to Wal-Mart and they will hook up a reader that tells you why your engine light is on (for free). I had the same symtoms. With my Tib it was one of the cylinders wasn't firing so I changed the spark plug and the spark plug wire and everything worked fine.

I bought my car 6 months ago knowing there was a transmission problem, incorrect 4th gear ratio, where the seller told me "the overdrives going bad" so i do not drive in overdrive, ever. A month after i bought the car when i had the car in overdrive by accident or not paying attention it would go into limp mode at like stop signs, but ever since i stopped driving in overdrive it has not happened once and my check engine light is on, but everything seems to run fine, so what my question really is, what would it cost to "fix" my transmission or take the check engine light off. Because overall i have no problems getting around but if i were to sell my car i would like to have the check engine light off.
