My son used my van the other night and says he hit a pothole. He got worried cause the steering wheel was not straight anymore so he says he pulled it to the side as hard as he could and he heard a crack and the wheel got stuck. He then pulled the wheel the other direction now the steering is loose and you can hear and feel a grinding/cracking noise when I turn. Please help me what did he do. Is this something I can fix on my own?

YOU NEED TO TAKE THAT PUPPY TO A REPUTABLE, BEEN AROUND A LONG TIME, ALIGNMENT SHOP

........AND SOON, IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU MAY HAVE SOME SUSPENSION DAMAGE....NOT JUST AN ALIGNMENT ONLY

IT MAY BE DANGEROUS TO DRIVE.....IT COULD POSSIBLE LOCK UP AND SEND YOU IN A BAD DIRECTION.....A FATAL DIRECTION! .........MIGHT BE BEST TO HAVE IT TOWED THERE.........MIGHT BEAT RIDING IN THE BACK OF A HURST A FEW DAYS LATER!!!

.............IF YOU "MUST" DRIVE IT THERE...............I'D GO SUPER SLOW, STAY BACK FROM OTHER CARS, AND GO STRAIGHT TO THE SHOP.........NO MORE JOY RIDING, UNTIL IT'S CURED!

EXPLAIN TO THEM...EVERYTHING YOU TOLD US....INCLUDING "FORCING" THE STEERING WHEEL

I took the van in as you said and they told me it is a broken steering column. He also said he has never seen that happen from a pothole but pulling the steering wheel probably did it.
