Computer problem
2008 Ford Ranger 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Hello,

I have a question about a 2008 Ford Ranger. Before buying a scan tool for it, I would like to know if this model operates in CAN protocol as per the standard for all 2008 vehicles and newer, or is it still operating the OBD-II protocol?

Thanks,
Amr Nasr

most new vehicles and most good scantools are CAN capable !!

The Diagnostic Methods Section provides information on routine diagnostic tasks.
When following powertrain diagnostics on vehicles with on board diagnostics (OBD), the system may be checked by an off-board tester referred to as a scan tool. This part contains information for carrying out diagnostics with a scan tool. A scan tool has certain generic capabilities that are standard across the automotive industry in the United States and Canada. All functions are selected from a menu. Refer to the instruction article provided by the tool manufacturer.

High Speed Controller Area Network (CAN)
High speed CAN is a serial communication language protocol used to transfer messages (signals) between electronic modules or nodes. Two or more signals can be sent over one CAN communications network circuit allowing 2 or more electronic modules or nodes to communicate with each other. This communication or multiplexing network operates at 500kB/sec (kilobytes per second) and allows the electronic modules to share their information messages.
Included in these messages is diagnostic data that is outputted over the CAN + and CAN - lines to the DLC. PCM connection to the DLC is typically done with a 2-wire, twisted pair cable used for the network interconnection. The diagnostic data such as self-test or PIDs can be accessed with a scan tool. For additional information on scan tool equipment, refer to DIAGNOSTIC METHODS .

Check engine light on

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.

Hi Have a problem, My 2006 ranger seems to be having a fuel? problem? It runs fine on initial startup, however after it is warmed up I lose power when I am idling for a long period(>60sec) of time or if I am coasting at highway speeds, The check engine light flashes on and off and I lose power, If I give it gas it kicks back in evetually, Or if I hold the idle up the problem does not occur. Could this be a fuel pump going bad? I went ahead and replaced the plugs, wires, checked the ignition coil and changed the fuel filter to no aviale. Is thier another sensor that could be causing the problem, Thanks Chris

3.Low fuel pressure.
4.Dirty fuel injectors.
5.Mass Air Flow Sensor.

Misfire codes

1.Defective spark plug.
2.Inadequate spark/coil,defective spark plug wire.
3.Lack of compression
4.False air leakage.
5.Faulty fuel injectors.
6.Insufficient fuel pressure.
7.Contaminated fuel.

So I have two matching things, three if you count the pressure test, Low fuel pressure, I guess either I have garbage in my gas tank or my fuel pump is going bad?

The check engine light came on at exactly 31,000 miles. No weird noises, no knocking, fluids look good, no weird smells, runs fine...is it a factory installed "warning" that it's time for a visit to the dealer? A tune-up? How do I get the light to turn off. I live in a remote area of Alaska with no dealer support. Thanks!

check engine light means there is a trouble code(s) that has been stored in the vehicle's computer system. you need to retrieve the trouble code(s). most auto part stores will do this for your for free, or you can purchase a diagnostic scanner and do it yourself. post the code(s) you get and we can further assist you with the problem.

My 2005 Ford Ranger's engine light came on yesterday. It's a V6, 3 liter. Belts look OK, due for an oil change. When idling getting slight chugging. Does it need a new fuel filter?

take the vehicle to a good autoparts store (autozone etc.) have them scan the computer(PCM) for codes (most do this free) .. repost with the codes for a better diagnosis and repair advice ..

You'll need to have the vehicles' computer scanned for fault codes so I can assist you better. Most retail auto parts suppliers will scan for free. Find out what the code is and get back to me. TY

The only way your going to get it off is to resolve the issue that put it on in the first place. You can go to Autozone and they will clear the computer but if the problem is not satisfactorily resolved, it will just come back on again.

I was driving when my ranger unexpectedly died. When it died the check engine, oil, and battery light came on. I've never had a problem with my truck since it's newer and low mileage. I didn't try to jump it since I'm not sure exactly what the problem is since all three lights came on at once. It will crank but won't try to catch it. So I don't believe it's the battery.

The lights came on as a resuslt of the engine dieing with the key on. That was normal. If the engine won't start, you need to check for spark and fuel to the engine. Most likely one will be missing.

Here is a how to for both. Check them and let me know what you find. Most parts stores will lend or rent the gauge you need to check the vehicle.

https://www.2carpros.com/how_to/how_to_check_fuel_pressure.htm

Let me know what you find.
