Loud whine

from what i have been reading im guessing it might need trans fluid

I heard the noise for the first time yesterday and havent drove it since. But i checked the clutch fluid and its very low so im going to fill that back up . Could low clutch fluid cause a whine? This is my first manual trans so im new to this

Does the noise occur all the time?
Does it happen if you rev the engine in neutral?
Does it only happen when the vehicle is in motion?
I'm trying to narrow down what is causing the noise.

It does not happen when i rev the engine in neutral. It only happens when its in motion in gear

With the engine running and the vehicle at a stop slowly press the clutch pedal in & release does the noise happen? Does the noise occur if you press the clutch pedal quickly?
Have you topped off the manual transmission fluid?

No it does not i tried both and i did not hear any difference. No i have not checked the transmission fluid but on the bottom of the trans where it connects to the engine i can see that at one time something was leaking.

Im going out to check the trans fluid in a few. There is not a dip stick for the trans fluid so i have to take the filler plug out to check it right? And if its not at the bottom of the fill hole then i need to add fluid correct?

I checked trans fluid and its filled to the bottom of the fill hole.

It whines or don't whine when you have the pedal pushed in?

If it were the throwout bearing, it would probably make the racket more with the pedal in or the noise might vary in pitch as it has pressure applied at different pedal heights

Prior to this issue, was it subjected to possible h.ell damage?

Everything in pointing toward the transmission. I could be something else, its difficult to pinpoint noises you can see in person over the internet. I would suspect one of the main bearings has failed or the gears are damaged (specifically 1 & 2 gear that is if the noise only occurs in those two gears).

I payed a donation, then it kicked me out. I'm not sure why it did that...but here is my question. I notice a high pitch whine, coming from what appears to be the engine or maybe the tranny. It's so high that I cannot locate it for sure. I lean more towards the front end, top part of my engine. It's been cold lately, and I've never seen or heard of it before this cold snap. I'm talking -20 f. I read and searched on the internet, and I've heard now some horror stories of folks with F150 whine problems that go towards the rear differential. Mine appears to be in the front, at the top. I've notice some humming/rattling lately in 4 hi, but this whine appears in both. I've only got 3000 miles on this thing. I'm affraid if I take it to ford, they'll tell me it's normail...like everything they do. What do you think?

I have seen some Fords (a little older) make a really strange howl when the IAC Motor (idle air control) malfunctions, but not with anything that new.Might want to go to the dealer anyway to get the complaint on paper as a problem while under warranty

happens mostly when your over 55 ,when it happens you can speed up or let of the gas and it goes away for awhile,seems when its colder out its worse,noise is in the engin compartment

when i accelerate i hear an annoying whining noise going through gears.I know it isnt the spedometer cable because it doesnt have one.Im completely stumped.

Does it seem like the sound is from the trans or could it be a differential.

I had the truck put into the shop a week ago to have the tranny checked, they put it on the dyno and said it was fine. It sounds like it is right behind the spedometer under the hood.

Based on that, it sounds like either the front differential or it could be the transfer case. Have they been checked or serviced?

As we accelerate to speeds over 25 the truck begins to whine and continues until we slow down.

It would depend ono where the noise is coming from ans since it is speed related, I would start with checking the various differentials. they could be out of gear oil.

Other possibilities would be wheel bearings.

It only makes the noise at speeds over 25 so can't shift to neutral while driving.

Why can't you shift into neutral while driving?I have done that many times on many different vechiles for diagnosing problems.

Above link has information on how to check differential oil level.

For checking wheel bearings, lift up wheels and check for excessive side play by shaking the wheel lightly. Turn the wheel manually and note if any noise ie emitted. Light noise would be hard to detect if you do not have any experience with it.

There appears to be no port on the differential as shown in the picture from the link given. It does appear to have leaked or to be leaking. Now what?

So are you talking about the front differential or rear differential?Also you can put a hand on the coil spring while turning the wheel to feel for a bad wheel bearing.

Check the front of the differential, item # 27 in diagram. The link is generic and location sometimes differs.

LUBRICATION

Capacity is 5.5-5.8 pts. (2.6-2.7L) of Motorcraft SAE 75W140 High Performance Synthetic Rear Axle Lubricant (F1TZ-19580-B). If vehicle is equipped with Traction-Lok, add an additional 4 ozs. of Friction Modifier (C8AZ-19B546-A). Capacities listed are approximate. Fill differential until fluid level is about 1/4" below bottom of filler plug hole.

There should be a side level fill hole level to fill and check the level.

Rear differential is leaking-can the leak be fixed or do we have to replace? How much does it take to replace it or fixit?

Wheres it leaking from?

Leaks are usually from sels and those can be replaced but if it is due to worn bearings, replacing the sels would not work. A rebuild is necessary.

i have the same problem with my 04 f150. when i let off the clutch especially. kinda sounds like a whining and then some metal rattling sounds. might need a new clutch. ive had this truck for 8 years and the noise started last night

It sounds like the throw-out bearing or input shaft bearing is out. Can you please shoot a quick video with your phone so I can hear the noise? That way I can tell for sure what's going on. You can upload it here with your response.
