I had transmission fluid and filter changed at a reputable place when my explorer had about 65,000 miles. It was already experiencing this delayed engagement problem so I thought that changing fluid would help

I have seen seals in the valve body get hard and allow fluid to bypass them causing a delay, but that would be odd on this new of a vehicle. Has the check engine light ever come on to indicate there may be an issue with a shift solenoid?

Hello, I have a 2005 Ford Explorer 4x4 V6 Flex Fuel vehicle. When I place the vehicle into drive (no matter what kind of flat or level area I'm parked on) the vehicle does not immediately go into gear, and the rear makes a "clunking" noise when it does finally go into gear.

Recently I had both of the front wheel bearing assemblies replaced. Since then, the entire vehicle shakes no matter what speed I am traveling at, and gets worse around the 70-75 MPH range. There is also a loud howelling sound coming from what sounds like the rear of the vehicle, but I'm not positive.

When driving in a parking lot (5-15MPH) there is a clicking sound coming from somewhere on the vehicle.

Any thoughts as to what may be causing these problems?

Thank You

Have the rear differential checked. I believe there is a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) on the rear differential that needs to be addressed. Ask your local dealer. If I recall, and this is from memory, the TSB is 05-23-3 regarding rear differential howling. There is a bearing that needs replaced and then the differential needs readjusted.

Let me know what you find. Please note, TSB's are not recalls. Thus it isn't a free repair.

2002 Ford Explorer will not go into gear. Brake lights and reverse lights work, gear arm moves freely between gears. What is the problem?

Check to make sure the linkage is connected and working. If it is, make sure the trans fluid is clean and full. If that is all good, trans pressures need checked. It could be a front pump or bad torque converter. Other than that, the problem is most likely internal.

When I have been driving for a short while and the suv gets hot the tranny will not engage into second gear. The rpms go up but I got noware. This only happens when it is at operating temps, when it is cold everything is great. The problem started after driving on the hiway in a heavy rain storm. I am not getting any codes and this only happens at take of speed. I replaced the air filter hopping it was the mass air flow sensor and the I cleand the corosion from the plug at the tranny range sensor but these things have not fixed the problem. the tranny oil and filter were done about 3000 km ago. I know ford are bad for trannys, I just hope it is a sensor or some thing simple that I am able to fix. Thank you for you answers. The engine is SOHC if that means anything.

Hi excentrifugle,

It could be the solenoids or it connections.

Check all connectors at trans for corrosion or contaminations and clean them up if necessary. do not delay, if there are corrosion due to water contamination, it would only get worse if not settled ASAP.

My flex plate was shattered. So I dropped the transmission and put it back together. After hooking up the wiring to the transmission, it does not move the vehicle. I added oil to the transmission. I put it in gear and the vehicle does not move. What should I look for? Thank you!James

HI there,

I must ask the obvious question first, you did up the torque converter bolts? did you have the converter out of the transmission? i would take off a cooler line and add some clear hose, run the engine and make sure that you have pump pressure, star there.

Thanks for the advice! I'll try the clear plastic hose to see if my pump is working. My flex plate was broken and I replaced it. I tightened the torque converter bolts to the flex plate.

First check the fluid. When you do smell the end and see if you can detect a burnt smell. You might need to change the fluid and the filter. If that is ok check the shifting linkage to see if it is shifting into other gears when you shift it.

Has the check engine light come on? Did this happen all at once? If so, have you had the TCM checked?

Let me know.

Good morning,

This sounds like the torque converter is locked up since it does move in reverse. The clutches in the torque converter are locked and it is like not pushing in the clutch on a standard shift when you come to a stop.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/automatic-transmission-problems

The torque converter will have to be replaced.

You need to diagnose the problem and locate the source before taking anyu action. You have already wasted so much time and money on it because of guessing.

The transmission would not take too much fluid at one go. You need to fill some, start engine, shift through gears, check level and top up again.

What was the initial problem for you to replace those parts?

sounds like the vent to the trans is plugged or onen of the things you replaced like the valve body may bewrong. it may be full as well. besides it only takes 9.5 qts to fill it anyhow. Before you pull the trans, have a trans guy run a scan on it, it may be an electrical problem or one of the clutch failed. Why did you start doing this stuff anyhow?

If the check engine light is on, have the computer scanned to identify possible transmission trouble codes. Other than that, you need to make sure the fluid is clean and full. Also, trans pressure will need checked to see if that is an issue. A trans tech will need to check that for you.

My vehicle runs fine for like two minutes, then it will not go into gear. I turned it off and unplugged the battery and reconnect it and it runs fine for a few minutes. If you try to shift to another gear the transmission will not respond. I have to unplug battery, reconnect and start again.

Here is a link to an article that features written step by step instructions and pictures explaining how to do the scan yourself, also I have included a link to our YouTube channel with a how to video on code scanning. Most scanners are inexpensive to purchase, you can purchase one from Amazon.com. Once you have the codes please get back to us so that we can further assist you. Thank you for visiting 2CarPros.

This might sound simple, but try disconnecting your battery for about 3 to 5 minutes. This sometimes resets your computer.

Disconnect the battery and let it set for about 5 to 10 minutes I had that same problem a couple years back so it will probably work for you to.
