Your car has electric steering there is a motor on the steering column to give you power steering.Since you changed the battery or jumped the battery and now your power steering is totally inop i bet you blew a power steering fuse. Look in your under hood fuse box you will see some square fuses with a clear window on top check all the fuses you will be able to tell if there blown by looking thru the clear window compare them to each other. The intermittent no power steering is another issue that you will have to have your Power steering control module cleared for codes and then recheck it for codes after you loose power steering. That is if you blew a power steering that code set codes falsely. I have seen the module or the motor go out on these cars. Check the diagrams below to see how the system works. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what you find.

Hi, did you not get a recall letter from GM? I got one, just got to the dealer so they car replace the module, or you can just do it yourself.

my power steering isn't working. My daughter left the lights on in the car and drained the battery, after having it jumped, the power steering stopped working. could this be a fuse?

My 2005 Saturn Ion powering steering does not work. I have replaced the fuses and still the problem perstists. I had a friend of mine who owns his own mechanic shop unhook the battery and hook it back up, but that did not work. I guess that was to re-set codes. Someone told me you have to do that like 5 times for it to work. Can you please help.
Thank You,
Tracy

Message comes on that indicates"power steering" and we lose the power steering. After we stop and start the power steering returns. Right now it is fine, but are unsure what is casuing the problem. The manual says that it is electric power steering. No Fluids.

Sounds like u have a bad power steering motor that's the most common reason for that pretty common.it goes on the bottom of ur steering column.they sell it seperately now u used to have to get the whole column.have ur power steering module scanned for codes and we can go from there.let me know if u have anymore questions.

I changed the spark plugs and took the car for a ride around the block. When I got back, I shut the car off and when I started it back up, I had no power steering. On the ride I went through a couple of deep water puddles, but never lost power steering from that before. I checked all wire harnesses I messed with when changing the spark plugs. I also checked the belt and pulley and they are turning. I hope I didn't screw something up and that its just a coincidence.

I doubt the spark plug replacement has anything to do with the steering. All the power steering stuff is in side the car aside from the fuse box Have you checked the power steering fuse in the underhood fuse box to see if its blown? It's square fuse see if its blown look thru the window on it.

I read a post and have a similar issue. having trouble with switch, no chimes at all, and power steering goes out. Please advise as to what will fix! I can not afford another car or a pricey repair bill.

What switch are you having problems with? Also whenthe steering goes out if yyou cycle the key does the steering come back on?If so you will have to have your power steering control module scanned for codes. It will take a professional scan tool not a diyer scan tool. You need on that can read all the computers in your car. Then let me know the exact code number you have not code descriptions. It will be a letter followed by four numbers. Then I can tell you whats going on.Most likely a bad steering motor but might need the steering module.

Steering problem
2004 Saturn Ion 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I attempted to jump a car and during the process i saw PWR STR appear on the dash and when i left the area I noticed I had NO power steering. How can I troubleshoot this issue? Would it be as simple as a fuse or would i need to get a whole new pump? Suggestions?

First of all thank you so much for your donation. Most likely you just blew a fuse it's going to be in you under hood fuse box there's two of them for it.There labeled EPS number 42 and 43 there 30 amp there going to be the outer square fuse's.They have a clear window on the top so you can see which one's are blown.
